China market: Smartphone shipments total 108.5 million units in 2Q14;
Xiaomi outperforms Samsung as top vendor, says Canalys
Steve Shen, DIGITIMES, Taipei [Wednesday 6 August 2014]

Smartphone shipments in China totaled 108.5 million units in the second quarter of 2014, accounting for
37% of global shipments, according to Canalys.

Of the top-five vendors in China in the second quarter, all but one were local brands, with Xiaomi Technology
overtaking Samsung Electronics as the top vendor in terms of sales volume in the quarter.

Xiaomi took a 14% share in China in the second quarter, on the back of 240% on-year shipment growth.
Lenovo, Yulong, Huawei, BBK, ZTE, Oppo and K-Touch, the eight local vendors in the top-10, together
accounted for a total of 70.7 million units or 65% share of the market.

Samsung and Apple, the only international vendors in the top-10, together accounted for shipments
of 20 million units, representing 18% of the overall smartphone market in China in the second quarter.

Samsung's slide to second place in China for the first time since the fourth quarter of 2011 and 15% on-year
shipment decline in the quarter reflects rapidly shifting demand toward 4G handsets.

Meanwhile, Apple had a relatively strong performance with its shipments growing 58% on year in the
second quarter in China.

Worldwide, smartphone shipments reached 292.4 million units in the second quarter of 2014, up 5% on
quarter and 23% on year.
