In praise of… Haaretz

By holding its country to the highest ideals, Israel’s left-leaning daily newspaper displays the greatest form of patriotism

The Guardian, Thursday 7 August 2014 19.18 BST

Israel’s Haaretz newspaper. ‘A study has found it is the source most cited, and presumably most trusted, by supporters of both Israel and the Palestinians.’

Editors at Haaretz, Israel’s left-leaning daily, were recently scanning the online readership figures when they came across something unexpected: their Hebrew edition had several thousand readers in Egypt. The best guess at an explanation: agents of Cairo’s intelligence service, schooled in Hebrew, were hooked. That will come as little surprise to the many around the world who have come to rely on the paper’s English language website. Now a study has found it is the source most cited, and presumably most trusted, by supporters of both Israel and the Palestinians. Inside Israel, it is often slammed for its defiant reporting of life in the occupied territories; many subscribers cancelled in fury at columnist Gideon Levy’s trenchant opposition to the recent offensive in Gaza. Haaretz remains unbowed, firm in its belief that the greatest form of patriotism is holding one’s country to its highest ideals. It is the very model of a liberal newspaper.
