History lives in its own kind of "time warp" -- where we get people thinking Clinton and Reagan were the best presidents in history because it is what THEY remember.

It happens with wars, too -- supporters of the Iraq war suddenly became opponents when it didn't go well. Supporters of Obama gloss over the fact that three fourths of the American soldiers killed in Afg. were killed under Obama (where is Cindy Shehan these days?)

And we forget just how bloody the Pacific was in WWII and that at that time, the very basis of the strategy for firebombing Tokyo was that only pressure on the Japanese people would change the leadership. Today, wars are "kindler and gentler" and as a result, the Palestinians have no problem with electing Hamas for its leadership.

I'm not against avoiding civilian casualties, but it presumes a level of gumption that may not exist in some populations.
