Taking this into account, what the Pals are doing doesn't seem quite so stupid:

They might have overstated the cost differential. And we are paying for the rockets right now.

Regardless, there is a couple of orders of magnitude difference in cost.

Their only hope is lasers. Which we started to field this year. We were working on a system about 10 years ago and it worked well. But, it was a chemical laser and those things are nasty and expensive.
