They don't compete with "knowledge". They compete with brute strength, and that is a different thing. Not unlike using a backhoe to dig a trench instead of shovels.

Over time, computers will undoubtedly develop something akin to intellect and things are changing quickly. And machines can easily handle tasks like template-based websites and iPhone apps that repackage data off the web.

Software libraries are huge today and you can find prepackaged code to do almost anything one needs to do.

Still. Software engineers are high demand, high paying jobs, at least in America and they're going to be for the rest of your life and mine.

Writing software today, I find, is a far more complex process than it was 40 years ago. While we had to deal with such nonsense as overlays, today we have to deal with multiple threads, communications, and intense delivery pressures that either weren't our concern or weren't as great a concern as at that time. We have unlimited memory, but unlimited stuff we need to put in it. Competent software development today is far more challenging than it was then.
