You haven't been following cognitive science recently, have you? 10 years ago, you were right. And there was really no clear path to get there.

But as Jerry Brown used to say, "that was then and this is now".

In the past 5 or so years ago, we have gained a lot of understanding how brains work. We have broken the code of retinas. Heck, they have even replaced part of the brain that is important to long term memory in a rat with a chip. Not only can they retain long term memory, their memory is better.

I doubt if they will ever match or exceed human intelligence outside of the lab. But there will be augmented humans in a decade or so. The first will be vets with traumatic brain injuries. Next it will be others with the same. After that...

We are approaching a technological singularity. Things are going to get really weird, really fast. Those that make it to the other side will live forever,..
