Right. And still have very little understanding compared to what there is to understand.

That might be a bit of an overstatement, but progress has been made. I know there have been articles claiming it. These are very small increments, however.

There is a lot of exciting research happening. Still, no one understands such fundamental activities as what goes on in the midbrain or frontal cortex or how "traffic" is routed.

While I believe Kurzweil is a visionary, I also believe he is overly optimistic about the Singularity. It is coming, but there are many exogenous factors (notably, the US federal government) which will slow it down.
