I suppose it depends on how you define 'compared'. When they can replace parts of brains with chips and the brains still function, we have learned a lot.

That might be a bit of an overstatement, but progress has been made.

When you can replace the receptors with a chip and images can be seen, you've cracked it.

Sure, there is progress to be made. But a lot of fundamental stuff has been done. It is not quite to the point of "it is just engineering now" but we are close.
