July 2014 retail and food services sales were $439.8 billion, virtually unchanged from June but 3.7 percent higher than July 2013. Excluding automobiles, retail and food services sales in July 2014 were $352.2 billion, up 0.1 percent from the prior month and 3.1 percent higher than one year earlier.

WASHINGTON—Spending at U.S. retailers stalled in July, the latest sign of fragile consumer demand that could leave the economy on shaky ground in the second half of the year.

Retail and food-services sales were unchanged last month from June when adjusted for seasonal variation, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. Americans spent more on food and clothing, but scaled back purchases of automobiles and at department stores.
