"Multicast standard-definition TV "doesn't seem to be what Congress had in mind" when it allowed broadcasters to have HDTV channels, Comcast Pres. Brian Roberts told general session Thurs.

He said he hopes broadcasters deliver true HDTV so everyone can see whether that's what consumers want. He said Comcast is fortunate to have initiated rebuilds that will increase channel capacity, which could be used either for HDTV or for more standard-definition channels, and they will " leave how we use that capacity up to the consumers."

Panelists questioned likely success of HDTV if sets are priced at $6,000, with Wink CEO Maggie Wilderotter noting that average TV set costs $297. "If you want people to pay a multiple of what they're paying for current TV sets, there has got to be a dramatic difference in what they see..."

I wonder how Bill Gates likes them apples. Remember, he invested $1 billion into Comcast for a 10% share and now Comcast's ceo "hopes broadcasters deliver true HDTV so everyone can see whether that's what consumers want".

First Intel defected, now Comcast, next I expect to see Compaq embrace Zenith's version of HDTV. Must be getting awful lonely these days in Redmond...

Can't say that I didn't warn Bill. I sent him an e-mail about six months ago suggesting that he invest in Zenith. $250 million for a 10% share seems a fair price to me. Anyone have a problem with that?
