I'm not sure whether it's projection or deflection... It's something.

It is a mixture of things. Extremists often engage in hyperbole to make their arguments seem stronger than they are. The problem is, not everyone realizes that it is hyperbole, especially the true believers. So right of center, corporate supporting Obama becomes a wild-eyed socialist bent on the destruction of America.

There is also a certain amount of projection. A lot of it deliberate. It was a favorite tactic of Rove, just to name one. It works because if their actions come to light, it is easy to shrug it off with "both sides do it" even though only one side has actually done it. The original accusations have more staying power than the subsequent discovery, so they can effectively cover their tracks. I guess this could also be deflection.
