>The damage to any culture after 350+ years of trauma would be massive and would take decades, if not longer, to repair.
It's been shown that the historical factors are actually pretty overblown...
Some psychologists do think the historical factors are overblown. I think there is too much ingrained/inherent dysfunction in the black community that disputes such an assessment.
Blacks have a hard time succeeding in this country because of things happening to them TODAY as much as anything that happened in the past (while that was always horrible). If hiring discrimination were to be resolved, police treated black neighborhoods just like they treated the white ones, class sizes in minority heavy public schools were reduced the size of classes in those that aren't; people in the inner city being given access to better shelter/nutrition/healthcare from birth, you'd see these racial gaps close considerably. Which is why it'd be good if we did those things.
Definitely. But the audience here will never buy it. They think blacks have been given way too much. Nonetheless, cities like Seattle and Portland continue to place a lot of emphasis on improving inner city neighborhoods and inner city schools, and are seeing significant results.....esp when it comes to the schools. One minority high school......the one where I saw Obama speak for the first time.........is doing so well and offering so many advanced programs that its drawing white kids to it. In fact, two white kids in my neighborhood will be attending next year.......they have to take three buses to get to the school.
Portland's and Seattle's efforts to improve their schools are starting to show with school enrollment. After decades of declining enrollment, both districts started seeing enrollment growth just before the recession. Since then, thanks in part to the recession, enrollment growth has accelerated and in a few years, Seattle is expected to exceed its 1970s peak.
There is other evidence of progress but you're point is well taken........when the playing field is more level, black progress accelerates.
The racial animus by whites that made it OK to make Africans slaves and keep them separate led to stop-and-frisks, white flight, and fewer resources put into inner cities once blacks showed up there... It's been there for centuries and manifests itself in the attitudes we see on this forum.
Yeah, and its not just blacks who suffered. Whites have paid a price.....albeit a much smaller one......for this racial BS. |
