It is hard to predict what will happen. Mainly because it is hard to see where there is a win for Putin. Putin seems to be a reasonably intelligent person. He may not be the greatest mind that Russia has ever produced, but he usually seems to understand the limitations of the situation.

He did gamble on Georgia. But, Commander Codpiece turned out to be all hat and no cattle. Did he even threaten sanctions? For the most part, he recapped his famous reading of My Pet Goat...


I read this one article where it indicated Putin's popularity in Russia was waning; that the economy was flagging; that Russians are very unhappy with their diminished status in the world. That may account for some of his idiocy.

But yeah, you're right......he seems smarter than this current action. It could be he realizes he won't get eastern Ukraine so he wants to annoy before he capitulates. Whatever it is, its a strange game.
