Anyone who questions the validity of polling is dismissed with condescension as someone who doesn't understand the theory. I don't question the theory. I question the vast gap between the theory and the reality.

I think folks are getting inundated by polls and surveys and many are turned off by that. I have also found that how a question is phrased / worded will elicit one response but an in depth conversation might indicate that the person actually has an entirely different perspective. Have seen some of that surrounding "immigration reform" in that the questions are biased. In other words, the polls are done and worded in such a manner to insure that a given position gets more emphasis. Some of the same folks doing the polling are some of the same folks who bring you the nightly news......
