One possible explanation is that most portfolios had a big winner of some sort to offset the mediocre performance of most of the other stocks in the portfolio.

There are several other possible explanations of course, including the ones you cited. For example, it could simply reflect a bunch of big winning stocks vs. fewer big losing stocks - i.e. that the distribution of stock returns to date is skewed. Any time the average stock is better than the median stock, you would expect the median portfolio to outperform the median stock.
