Murphy's been correct many times before on a good percentage of his picks, of course he's not saying that it will be $32 tomorrow.

If you go into the technical matters of the 56.6/57.6 thing it surfaces that it would require the cooperation of the telcos to be able to communicate at this bandwidth. In essence it requires that the other end of the POTS line see something in addition to (or other than) the telco's normal 8K sampling PCM cards. I have a feeling that since this is also described as lower-speed in the opposite direction that Rockwell may be utilizing some of the developments that BTRE had previously come up with in their limited-bandwidth HDSL chip. There is no doubt that it can be done, it will just require a lot of cooperation, something the RBOC's aren't very willing to do - yet.

Promising though was the announcement by AT&T of broadening their ISDN access to all 48 states. The announcement does mention this is aimed at small-mid sized businesses for now but 0.03/min should be an attractive rate. Diamond does make a dandy ISDN adapter/modem from what I understand.

Also promising is the anticipated sales of the ViRGE-based cards as the S3d marketing campaign emerges, and the fact that 28.8/33.6 modems are the hottest things on the shelves right now. As mentioned on the other thread: DIMD $99, USRX $149 - most choose the Diamond. I hope there's some profit in that $99. ;-)

I think it's more a recognizing of value and the fact that the techs can actually benefit from the type of economical environment that the feds/others are leading us to believe that we are in.
