It's not a god. But it can do things we need that the private sector won't. If we need housing that developers won't build, it's preferable that the government build it than have people on the streets. At least to me. And cities like Seattle have found that it's cheaper in the long run to build small apartments for people than it is to deal with them being on the streets.
