I own productive farm land in North Dakota and the farmers I know which is a few sell their crops forward to cover costs. If they cannot sell forward to cover costs they do not plant. There is always crops trading that will cover future costs, as we grow wheat, barley, oats, soybeans, corn, eatable beans and sugar beets. They can take care of weather damage with insurance. These farmers have at minimum bachelor degrees in Ag Econ and most have their master degrees.

BTW, they do not sell the whole crop forward - just to cover costs. The crop over and above the costs become the profit.
