Hi d[-_-]b; Re: "Check your history. Israel should simply invade, clear out all Hamas fighters, weapons and then maintain a DMZ - they never should have left in the first place."

Invade is easy.

Clear out all Hamas fighters is essentially impossible. The majority population, as far as I can tell, supports the fight. I say this since Hamas seems to have won the election. Putting Israeli soldiers in Gaza would maintain a steady KIA count. And Israel doesn't seem to have the inclination to accept casualties. See their recent prisoner swap. I can't understand the attitude; if their crappy piece of land was given to them by G-d and is worth dying for, then it should be worth having prisoners of war for.

Since the objective of the Palestinians is to make life in Israel unpleasant, having a steady drain of soldiers would be arguably worse than the fireworks. The only realistic military solution is to push the population out.

What I'm saying is instead of "clear out all Hamas fighters", the only plan that would be a true victory would be "clear out all enemy population". Or "clear out all Hamas fighter and supporters". And that doesn't seem to be possible from a diplomatic point of view. I mean what would happen to Israel economically if Europe refused to accept Israeli imports or flights? More than half the US votes Democratic, what would the US do if Israel chose the ethnic cleansing option?

Re: "PS: You do have the sweet disposition of several retired old cranks I've met before. I'll just assume you've been drinking. Cheers!"

Has been known to happen...
