So as one considers the past what does that suggest re the indexes?

Some can see it before it happens. Most see it AFTER it happens. Look at where things were in 10/2008 and now 2014. Look at the sectors and look what happened. ON an aside the LOW for that period for the bell curve avg was 3. I'm on record for x
