Yes, i remember that conversation as well...

As always, there are conflicting forces at work. The U.S. is regaining its economic edge as a result of technological advances in energy production, i.e. fracking, and those advantages continue to increase as the industry goes up the experience curve, making it possible for producers to make money at lower prices for natural gas while benefiting the overall economy. This makes the U.S. able to continue to reduce its deficit as a % of GDP and perhaps even return to a balanced budget for a brief period.

However, the American military industrial complex never met a war it didn't like (with the exception of the war on poverty), so i expect that despite being essentially energy independent, we will continue to treat the Middle East as if it mattered instead of ignoring it like we should be doing.

Hence I expect another treasury draining war. Rinse, repeat.
