Nigeria Has One Ebola Case Left as 7 Patients Leave Hospital

By Elisha Bala-Gbogbo Aug 26, 2014 12:06 PM ET

******If this is true, I may change my stance on this spreading worldwide. If Nigeria can contain this then it is not spreading as quickly as I would have thought. The head of Samaritan's Purse said it would spread quickly in Nigeria. Still will watch closely but this is good news IF TRUE.***************

Seven people undergoing treatment in Nigeria for Ebola were discharged after successful treatment, leaving one person still with the virus in Africa’s most populous country, Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said.

“Nigeria has contained the Ebola virus disease,” Chukwu told reporters today in Abuja, the capital. “We now have only one case. We have so far successfully managed and discharged seven persons who tested positive.”

Out of 257 people placed under surveillance on suspicion they might be infected, only 128 remain after 129 went through the 21-day incubation period without showing any symptoms, he said.

Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian state worker, died from Ebola five days after flying into Nigeria’s commercial hub of Lagos on July 20. All the cases of the virus in the country of about 170 million people have been those who either had primary or secondary contact with Sawyer, according to Nigeria’s health ministry.
