John, Shoulda,Coulda. I think Microsoft will at least meet their numbers this quarter. Afterall, they said as much when they released last quarter's numbers. Unless, the asian flu bit them.

The tech's are getting hammered today especially the upper tier companies. One must remember that Microsoft makes its money every time a pc is sold. The equipment makers (chips, computers, routers, modems) all are competing on price, so their profit margins are eroding except for those who manage productivity i.e. Compaq and Dell. PC unit sales are not declining and it looks like Christmas sales will be good although the $1000 models are the ones selling. However, Microsoft still rakes in its cut regardless of the type of machine being sold.

As far as other stocks that I would rather own. Besides Microsoft my bets are played in the drugs and biotech area. Over the years, the drug arena seemed to do well when techs were down. So I never got hammered by being exposed to just one industry. Biotechs have really got my interest this year. They have great potential but also many disapointments. You almost have to play a half dozen or so in order to increase your odds of finding a home run stock that will more than offset the stocks that disappoint.

Regards,
Bob
