I have few doubts that Vlad I sees himself as a major figure in Russian history. And, no doubt, is surrounded by people who reinforce that belief on a daily basis.

Russia might have pulled off a major gain in territory in the early 1980s. But, after the chose to go into Afghanistan, a great example of why you don't fight discretionary wars, their capacity to do that has eroded. Present day Russia is but a shadow of its former self. And the West is much more powerful, both in absolute terms and relative to Russia, than it was then. If push came to shove, there are NATO countries that could successfully take on Russia by themselves. That wasn't true 30 years ago.

Depending on your opponents to set on their hands when you threaten them is a risky strategy. Sometimes it might work, for a while. But sooner or later it will blow up.
