John, that's ridiculous. I'm sorry. But it is. The urge to restrain your gung ho colleague, who would work from 5am until 10pm, is different than mocking someone for going to school at all, or for failing to fail. The comparison is ludicrous. Dumbing down is different than dropping out, and making sure you never have a shot at a decent life. It's not even the same impulse. The first, is a desire not to work super hard, excel, and stick out, the other impulse to to drag down anyone who might look like they will succeed at all. The first impulse will make you mediocre- which doesn't destroy your life. The second impulse will assure you a life on welfare, or a life of crime.
Obviously you can compare anything you want to, but this is just apples and oranges, and bespeaks a desperate desire at equivalency that I just don't understand. The virulent disdain for education in the underclasses of black society is unlike anything we see in poor Hispanic communities and poor Asian communities. It's a sickness, and it needs to be dealt with. |
