Paper bags don't biodegrade as fast as some think, particularly in a landfill, where they quickly end up; but there are other environmental issues such as the amount of water and energy required to make them in the first place, as well as the increased energy usage throughout the process of transporting heavier, bulkier paper bags (a single truckload of plastic replaces about 7 truckloads of paper).

Plastic bags are far less harmful in landfills than are paper since they require less space.
