Apple: Stifel, RBC Upbeat on Prospects for Mobile Payments Debut

Ahead of Apple’s (AAPL) media event next Tuesday, September 9th, the Street is somewhat pre-occupied
with the notion that new iPhones unveiled will include a mobile payments, or mobile wallet function.

Last Friday brought a piece from The Financial Times stating NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) will provide a
near-field communications, or NFC, chip that will be used by the phone to provide contactless payments.

Over the weekend came a piece from Matt Townsend of Bloomberg stating that Apple is working with
Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA) and American Express (AXP) on the wallet function, citing a single unnamed
source.

The response today from folks who actually cover the credit card processors and the rest of payments are
fairly optimistic about Apple’s prospects.

RBC Capital’s Daniel Perlin, who follows Visa, Mastercard, the point-of-sale terminal vendors such as NCR
(NCR) and Micros Systems (MCRS), writes that Apple may establish a loyalty points system:
