An IP attorney on this site could answer, if it is a technique to catch and stop misuse of the SI properties.

Does Apple have an identifier hidden in iOS icons? Would SI have a watermark, invisible generally, in the messages or in the icons? If it is a way to protect their property, they wouldn't answer your question.

You see TV stations putting the translucent watermarks or logos in the lower right corner, and some have their logo, real or electronic, in the background throughout the screen image, so it is difficult to electronically remove it. And removing it would show willful violation of copyright.

Owners of movies, shown on TV for instance, don't want to make it easy for people to copy their property and resell it without leaving a trail.

That's my guess.
