BEIJING— Microsoft Corp. has lost a top executive in China to Chinese search giant Baidu Inc., in another setback for the U.S. company there.

Zhang Yaqin will become Baidu's president for new business, effective Wednesday, the Chinese company said Monday. He previously served as Microsoft's vice president and chairman of its Asian-Pacific research and development group.

Microsoft didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Zhang's departure comes as Microsoft faces growing challenges in China. The State Administration for Industry and Commerce is investigating whether the company violated antimonopoly laws in the way it bundled its Office and Windows software there. It has offered few details of the probe.

Microsoft has said it abides by Chinese laws and is cooperating.

Mr. Zhang was a high-profile Microsoft executive involved in the country's emerging R&D scene. He was also on Microsoft's executive management committee, advising on its China strategy.

Baidu is ratcheting up competition with e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Internet conglomerate Tencent Holdings Ltd. It has been snapping up high-profile talent lately. Earlier this year it hired Andrew Ng, formerly head of Stanford University's artificial-intelligence lab, to head up a new R&D center in Silicon Valley.
