However if it is made too efficient :

The cards that offer 5% on specific categories would likely stop that feature - the idea is to get the customer used to carrying and using that card - how many people strictly remember when and for which category the 5% applies. If the customer uses the card pretty much only for 5% (made efficient whatever process) then the incentive for the company diminishes greatly.
