This is certainly an arbitrage opportunity, but it's not sustainable. Unless you carry a balance, credit card companies don't have the margin to pay users back 5% on every transaction.
5% back offers have been around for years, and if the merchants kick in for the cost of the rewards, it can be sustainable. I'm not to only person using the 5% in my arsenal of cards to yield a few thousand dollars per year of easy return. Hopefully Apple will understand that this sort of opportunity is something that will help sell their product, for if they overlook it, they exclude not only those who care now, but might care later.
