Very sorry to report this, but..
Bought a Packard Bell 233MMX for $999. 3.2 gig hard drive; 24meg ram. Compaq lumps of junk couldn't compare. CompUSA store models were way overpriced (I think this is good sign for GTW). Could've bought Gateway, but decided to save the $200-300 bucks for my own self.
