I believe "Free trade" was the downfall of the middle class. Free trade was never fair trade, but was trading higher labor costs for cheaper labor costs. As for finding that equilibrium good luck, we've had crappy products for quite some time. China is pathetic at manufacturing anything that is safe, at least for export.
