I think the main problem with the US is that the structure of economy has fallen over a tipping point. There is excessive "rent seeking" behavior in the US economy. Which is to say an inordinate amount of the productivity is drained by those with the most capital without them actually providing much in the way of productive returns (i.e. they are there to let you draw water from the well, and charge a hefty fee for it without doing much else). This, combined with the ICT revolution, is hollowing out the social structure and economy. So you are seeing a U shape structure where there are jobs and activity at the extremes, but the middle is hollowed out. The change is real and has serious implications for economic and political policies. Our idiot in chief will go down as one of the most ineffective presidents in history, though I doubt anyone can top Bush's record.
