For me, the venn diagram goes the like this-- the phone's use cases is a big circle, and the watch' use cases is a smaller circle completely surrounded by the phone's circle. I can see no situation where I would ever want to be without my phone, but would want a cellular watch. Even in your specific example, if you want to map your run, or accurately measure your distance, you need your phone — which means you don’t need your watch. No big deal, is just leave the watch at home and they make arm bands for iPhones. I'm not getting a large screen iPhone just so I could leave it at home.
