Uh, no. There is/was no such right. Texas joined the Union because it couldn't hold off Mexico forever. In addition, its population was too small to be a viable country. Plus, it was about the only way to get out from under the debts it had run up during the war for independence. Sam Houston knew that, which is why that was his goal all along.

What Texas was very good at was creating its own mythology. You fell for one of them. Some of the ones that Sam Houston came up with are fascinating. Like the Yellow Rose of Texas.
