You could use Osicom's Gigamux for long haul applications by adding erbium doped amplifiers (very expensive), but you would be paying up for capabilities that you normally wouldn't use in a long haul situation, so it doesn't really make sense. A short haul system is far more complicated than a long haul system because of the complex protocols involved, hence the reason why there are very few competitors with a product ready to ship in the short haul arena that is data transparent.

I can't imagine it would be very difficult for Osicom to develop a long haul product, but it will be far more difficult for them to compete in the long haul arena than the short haul arena. Being that they are a company that specializes in networking, I would think they would have an edge in the short haul market.
