Our gut bacteria is likely metabolizing artificial sweeteners into something which makes us glucose intolerant.

We're just beginning to study the impact our Gut Microbiome has on our health.

latimes.com

Feeding mice artificial sweeteners raised their level of glucose intolerance (impaired their ability to metabolize sugar) by changing the composition of their gut bacteria.

Mice whose gut bacteria was previously suppressed with extensive antibiotics pre-treatment did not develop glucose intolerance when fed artificial sweeteners.
