I agree with you. My father's "discipline" tended to "get away from him" when he disciplined me while drunk. Then, he occasionally would "whip" me with the buckle end of his belt. This was before child abuse was a concept.

This was a southern man who'd won a scholarship to college, and graduated magna cum laude. But, he'd been rasied with the idea of "spare the rod, spoil the child". When he disciplined me while sober, he'd always say "this hurts me more than it hurts you"...

He played a large part in my decision not to marry and not to have kids. I didn't want to become him.
