I never wanted to be my mother- who I absolutely hated as a child, because she was pretty violent. I'm adopted, so maybe that has something to do with the fact that I'm nothing like her at all (thank goodness). I've never had to hit or beat my children. Not only was it not necessary, I never wanted to do it.

I doubt you would have become your father. There truly is a volitional component. No one makes you abuse a child, except you. A person can stop, if they want to.
