So you know your genealogy back across the Atlantic. We're stuck 1600s New England except for one line--an Italian grandfather--who came from a small mountainous village there. A cousin went to that village years ago to do genealogy as well as tour and found that 90% of the names in the graveyard were my grandfather's surname...ha! Rather incestuous, we all thought and it made the genealogy work near impossible. I'm curious what you mean by 'slash and burn' agriculture across the south? Our people, based on surnames, seem to be mainly English. One Irish and then the one Italian. Summer before last I spent a month in your neck of the woods with my youngest daughter. One of the things I really enjoyed was the full day spent on Ellis Island.
