I dealt with the Clinton administration on a few issues regarding access to foreign medications for HIV and cancer patients and other FDA issues. The Clintons were extremely unwilling to go against the wishes of Democratic Congressman Henry Waxman, who was adamantly opposed to the various things we wanted. After obtaining the administrative actions and the passage of some of the laws we wanted, I joked with associates that I thought the Clintons could always be trusted to do the right thing . . . . . . just as soon as we had fully communicated to them the actions and venues through which they would experience extreme public embarrassment if they chose not to do the right thing. I'm unaware of any principles they believe in beyond being well-liked and popular. That faint praise might be a good thing when compared with "true-believers" in leadership positions. Leaders with strong belief systems are most often remembered for their excesses and monumentally mistaken decisions which were dictated by their beliefs in spite of the known facts of the situation.
