The key thing to realize is that the "greatest money maker the world has ever known" is making 60%+ of that money from a single product. More than 60%. Sure, I'd love to see Apple diversify beyond the iPhone, just as I'm sure Exxon investors worry about life after oil. In the meantime, Apple is doing what they can to build a moat around the iPhone without throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I agree with you that the loss of market share could jeopardize the appeal of the iPhone, so Apple should consider that in their long term strategy. But it's hard to argue with the success Apple has had and continues to have.
