Further emphasizing how utterly stupid bend-gate, or bend-ghazi (my preference), is: Apple responded to Jon Fortt of CNBC that only nine users have complained about bending iPhone 6+.
That's referring to how many people the company reports have contacted them directly. Those with bent phones aren't prone to call/email Apple until they hear what the policy will be as it shakes out. Also, cases of warping that will happen gradually haven't had time to kick in. Follow social media and you'll see plentiful reports (including photos) of regular users who have experienced the warping. It will be slightly more than nine people asking for refunds/replacements.

I don't understand why the coverage is focused on the back pocket, when it is happening for people placing it in their front pockets, too.

There's noting silly, overblown, or irrational about the unhappy customers. Apple made the right move by announcing that they'll take care of anyone with the problem, but depending upon how it goes when the masses use the phones for a couple months (including in their front pockets), this could be an extremely expensive recall/warranty issue making previous "gates" look trivial.

If Apple is fortunate and it doesn't get out of control, they still have to consider the damage already done to the quality reputation. The timing of the 8.0.1 brick bug didn't help.
