Those with bent phones aren't prone to call/email Apple until they hear what the policy will be as it shakes out.

Where did you get that idea? If you ask me, those with bent phones who are smart have every incentive to call/email Apple immediately while the defective phone can still be returned (14 days).

So what percentage of people in the world do you think are smart? 50%? 10%? Even at 1% smart, we are talking about less than thousand incidents. Let's not get carried away with the sky falling yet again.

Anyway, the Verge has been granted access to the testing room. This is very reminiscient of antenna-gate, which, if I recall, blew over pretty quickly.
