Self awareness & developement of consciousness can be observed unfolding from birth & earliest life of children. The same principals are found to apply as we would find in evolution and any emerging developing interacting brain/nervous system thru the senses, reacting to the needs of the body. (sleep/fatigue, hunger,pain,pleasure, hot,cold, loud noises,mothers voice etc etc)
To say that we have no idea of where self awareness comes and must have "faith" to understand it, has to be one of the more profoundly stupid statements, i assume you have raised children?
Ever watch an infant suckle after waking up crying? Do you think that mother's milk has a scent/ odor that can be detected by that infant? Satisfies its hunger? Is warm & pleasing sensation for it? The warmth & softness of the breast & perfect shape of the nipple? The cooing sounds of the mother?
Then only just wait till they open their eyes & start moving around & walking, then your really in for it or even later when they start asking questions "why why why"...
