Mutations are supposed to be random (not "most often random") which means natural selection can't do a thing till a random event happens. That makes it a random process.

Furthermore, evolution is supposed to proceed tiny micro step by tiny micro step. So every time a random mutation is acted upon by natural selection, the next tiny micro step can't happen till another fortuitous (that means lucky) random mutation happens. IOW the path of evolution has to be random.

Aren't you glad you brought this up?
