This was the interesting bit I found in that article.

"The statistics body been forced by the European Union to investigate the amount of money splurged on illegal drugs and prostitution. Today was its final deadline to publicise the findings, which are now included in the national accounts. The EU said such work was necessary to create a fair comparison of different national economies."

So if we spend more money on prostitutes and drugs than on beer and wine, that indeed is a lot of money and untaxed activity at this time. However, I bet it's less per capita than either the Belgians, the Germans, or the French. Why hasn't that data table been produced and included in the article for the reader to consider? -g-

/edit. Ahhh, I found the figure for Spain.

Lets see if the figures for France, Germany, and some of the other European countries are available. -g-

/edit. French update.

France’s statistics agency is refusing to include drugs and sex work out of concern that prostitution, for example, often stems from sexual slavery and should not be given the veneer of economic legitimacy.

How noble of the French statisticians. It's a pity they somehow think that are something special rather than part of the team -lol-
