| | | I installed the Windows 10 Preview. I encountered a couple of surprises along the way.
Normally, I don't use the Windows Install. It's far quicker to Apply the Install.WIM image directly. Things went OK, but I couldn't Activate my system afterward. Eventually, I gave up and used Install.
After burning the DVD, the thing wouldn't boot. Some problem with the coding. Again, I refused to waste more time with it and simply mounted the .ISO file in Windows 8 and ran Install from there. This worked as expected.
In about ten minutes, I had a Windows 10 system. Annoyingly, the screen resolution was set to 1024 x 768! Easy enough to change: Right-click the desktop and select Resolution. But it only went to 1680 x 1050! Obviously, my machine's video drivers needed updating.
In Device Manager, I let Windows retrieve the correct drivers. In a few seconds, new drivers were installed and my screen was at full 1920 x 1200. Joy.
Everything else I did for the last couple of days brought no unpleasant surprises. Except for one thing. . .
My 16-Bit software wouldn't run.
Usually, this means enabling 16-Bit support. But when I did, only a few programs worked. The programs that wrote to screen memory directly produced error messages pointing me to NTVDM (NT Virtual Dos Machine.)
Of course, NTVDM was working. If it wasn't, NONE of my 16-Bit programs would work. So what's wrong?
Eventually, I discovered that Windows 10 has some new features added to the Command Prompt Window: Line Wrapping, Clipboard Filter, Wrap on Resize, New Shortcuts, Extended Editing, Leading Zero Trim, and Selectable Opacity. Disabling these NEW features solved my problem.
At this point, I don't know if what I experienced is a permanent alteration of how the Command Prompt Windows work or if my problem will be rectified before the final version of Windows 10 becomes available.
Since I've only had a couple of days to work with Windows 10, I haven't formed any strong opinions about it. For now, I think it will be an OK system. Many of the things I found profoundly annoying about Windows 8 have been corrected.
Cheers, PW. P.S. I installed the 32-Bit system because 64-Bit systems lack 16-Bit support entirely.
