New combinations of existing traits aren't new traits though. Once again that is dependent upon how you define trait. No organism lives and dies by one feature only. It is always a matter of combinations. For example it matters very little how you ears fold if you are deaf. I am not currently using trait as a synonym for gene. I mean something more. How much more? I'm not sure, that is usually the function of a give-and-take conversation in which the precise current meaning is established. English is a fungible language with rules for extending it into new words and expressions which often exist only for the duration of a single talk. English is a useful skill for expressing things that may not have ever been expressed before and therefore are not recorded in a book. Without this flexibility there can be no conversation, only lectures.
